CV

Mgr. Helena Lohrová, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of English Studies, University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, Czech Republic. She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham, UK, where she completed her doctoral thesis Internal Meetings: The Process of Decision-making in Workplace Discourse. The thesis applied Conversation Analysis to a longitudinal study of decision-making practices in internal meetings of a large Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the UK.

Her academic background includes teacher education in English and Geography at the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň. She joined the University of South Bohemia in 2010 and teaches linguistics, discourse analysis, and related courses within both general linguistics and teacher education programmes. Prior to and alongside her academic career, she gained teaching experience in secondary and tertiary education and also worked at the English for International Students Unit (EISU) at the University of Birmingham.

Her research interests lie in applied linguistics and discourse studies, with a particular focus on spoken workplace, institutional, and educational discourse, Conversation Analysis, and critical language awareness. She is especially interested in how interactional practices shape professional roles, decision-making, and learning processes across institutional contexts. Her monograph Decision-making in Meetings Discourse: Applied Linguistic Research was published by Academia in 2015.

Alongside her research and teaching, she is actively involved in international cooperation in teacher education. She coordinated the Erasmus+ project Teachers of English for Future Europe (TEFE, 2020–2023) and currently serves as overall project coordinator of its continuation, TEFE A+ (2023–2026). Within this work, she contributes to the development and implementation of the TEFE Framework for the Internationalisation of Teaching Practice and Employability, with a strong emphasis on mentoring quality, reflective practice, and evidence-informed enhancement of international teaching placements.

Dr Lohrová supervises theses in Conversation Analysis and Discourse Analysis, particularly those exploring workplace, business, and classroom interaction.
