CV

Mgr. Helena Lohrová, Ph.D., graduated from the Faculty of Education, University of West Bohemia in Plzeň as a teacher of English and Geography. In 2012, she was awarded a doctorate in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham, UK.  Her thesis, entitled Internal Meetings: The Process of Decision-making in Workplace Discourse, applied Conversation Analysis (CA) as a methodology for the investigation of how decisions are reached discursively. The thesis presents the results of a longitudinal study of the talk enacting decision-making in the meetings of a large Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the UK.

Helena joined the Institute of English Studies, University of South Bohemia in 2010. She lectures in Linguistics, specialising in Conversation Analysis. During her doctoral studies in Birmingham, she worked for a number of years for a specialised language centre – English for International Students Unit (EISU). Prior to that, she taught courses of English and Commercial Correspondence at the University of West Bohemia and worked as a teacher of English at Mikulášské Grammar School in Plzeň.

Her present research interests focus on the areas of spoken workplace and institutional discourse; in particular, on clarifying the communicative roles of selected discursive practices. In 2015, her monograph Decision-making in Meetings Discourse: Applied Linguistic Research was published by the Academia Publishing HouseAs a teacher, she is active in applying the insights gained during her research to the development of teaching materials and business communication training in the workplace.

Dr. Lohrova invites thesis proposals in the field of Conversation and Discourse Analysis, with a specific emphasis on exploring workplace, business, and classroom discourse.
