What are the humanities and what is their relevance to society? The Faculty of Arts of USB will answer with lectures and workshops

The Faculty of Arts at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice will participate in the national event Humanities Week on Tuesday and Wednesday, 18 and 19 November 2025. The aim of this initiative is to present to the professional and general public the diverse research and educational activities of scientists and scholars working in the humanities. This year's theme is "Memory in Words, Words in Memory", which commemorates the 900th anniversary of the death of the St. Vitus dean and chronicler Kosmas.

Humanities are often perceived as less necessary, yet they play a key role in understanding society, culture, language, and history. Therefore, the Faculty of Arts of the University of South Bohemia, which offers education in history, philology, culture, and teacher training programs, considers the Humanities Week a great opportunity to showcase what the humanities are truly about and how they contribute to our everyday lives.

"This year, following the example of last year, we have prepared a two-day varied programme. Thematic lectures and workshops will showcase the research areas of our male and female researchers. We are looking forward to the participation of all interested members of the general public who are interested in what it looks like at the Faculty of Arts of the USB, what our academics are like and what and how they teach here," says Tereza Uhlíková on behalf of the organizers of the event.

Visitors can look forward to lectures on history, archives, linguistics, literature, and archaeology. Among the guests will be the leading Czech translator Alice Flemrová. The programme will also include demonstrations of archaeological finds and other presentations in the humanities.

The Humanities Week is jointly organised by eleven faculties of philosophy in the Czech Republic under the auspices of the Association of Deans of Faculties of Philosophy. The event was first initiated by the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno, which extended the celebrations of the UNESCO World Philosophy Day. In 2025, Humanities Week will take place nationwide from November 17 to 21. All events are free of charge. A detailed programme is available on the website tydenhumanitnichved.cz or www.ff.jcu.cz.
