USB joined the International Day of Roma by hoisting the Roma flag

The Romani flag was hoisted at the University of South Bohemia. USB thus joined other universities across the Czech Republic, symbolically commemorating the International Day of Roma. This day is celebrated annually on April 8 and refers to the World Romani Congress held in 1971 in London, which was also attended by a Czechoslovak delegation. It was then that the International Romani Union was founded, whose delegates established the design of the Romani flag and the text of the international Romani anthem, as well as formulated common goals of the international Romani movement. Today, the International Day of Roma is a globally recognized opportunity to commemorate the history, language, culture, and current position of Roma and Romani people in society.

The first faculty to hoist the Romani flag on this day was the Faculty of Arts at Charles University in 2025. This happened thanks to the initiative of students and teachers of Romani studies at the Faculty of Arts. In 2026, other faculties and universities throughout the Czech Republic, including USB, are joining in the symbolic raising of the flag.
