The University of South Bohemia joined the International Day of Solidarity with Belarus

On 25 March, Belarusians celebrated the 105th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the People's Republic of Belarus. Many call it the Day of Will, some consider it Independence Day. On this day, Belarusians have traditionally celebrated Freedom Day with mass marches, rallies and concerts, and these celebrations have regularly been accompanied by mass detentions by Lukashenko's forces.

This year's Freedom Day is different from all previous ones. On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a war against Ukraine using the territory of Belarus. The Lukashenko regime became an accomplice to the war, while the Belarusian people launched an anti-war resistance. President Lukashenko is trying to suppress the anti-war movement in the country. Since 24 February 2022, at least 1 575 Belarusians have been detained for their anti-war stance. Fifty-six people have already been sentenced to prison terms ranging from 1 to 23 years. There are 11 Belarusians in prison accused of wanting to fight on the side of Ukraine – 8 of them have already been sentenced.

The University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice joined this important day and the solidarity with the Belarusian people by symbolically flying the flag of Belarus on the building of the Rectorate.
