Sustainable mineralogy, a film screening, vermicomposting or a tour of the simulation centre. All this and more will be on offer during the European Sustainable Development Week 2026, in which the University of South Bohemia is taking part for the third time.
This year's edition is held in the spirit of Education for Sustainability and offers a varied programme across all faculties. Pick the events that appeal to you.

Sustainable amateur mineralogy

How can we strike a balance between mineral collecting, nature conservation and science? Come to a lecture featuring a display of minerals and rocks.
Guided tour of the aquaponics hall

How can fish farming be combined with growing plants while saving resources? Take a look inside the FFPW USB aquaponics hall. An additional tour will take place on 8 October at 12:30 p.m.
Demonstration of the sustainable operation of the simulation centre

The use of local and organic food in public catering

Compost Me – film and discussion

A free screening of the film Compost Me (Belgium, 2024).
At 8:30 p.m. it will be followed by a discussion with Adam Vokáč on natural burial. The discussion can also be watched online.

Vermicomposting: when earthworms take charge of your kitchen waste

What belongs in a wormery and what doesn't? This hands-on workshop will show you how to do home vermicomposting, how to work with earthworms and how to avoid odours and fruit flies.
Nature walk "An expedition into the campus"

Join botanists, ornithologists and entomologists to discover the nature of the campus. Bird ringing, aquatic insect catching and an exploration of the faculty garden await you. The event is also suitable for children.
Volunteer work in the faculty garden 5–9 October 2026 | Faculty of Science USB, Branišovská 1760
Help look after the faculty garden, turn the compost, plant new growth or maintain the sand dune. The exact date will be confirmed depending on the weather.

What do art, landscape and sustainability have in common? A lecture by Prof. Miroslav Lapka will offer a look at contemporary forms of Land Art and their connection to the landscape.

How can sports projects be managed so that they are sustainable in the long term while remaining accessible to the public? Jan Bürger from the Svachovka golf resort will share his practical experience.
Photovoltaics at the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences USB
See how the photovoltaic power plant on the main building of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences USB works and what savings it brings in practice. Over the first two years of operation, the faculty generated and consumed 204 MWh of electricity and saved approximately CZK 959,000.
Start with yourself
A university-wide challenge organised by the Faculty of Theology will serve as a reminder that sustainability also begins with everyday decisions, relationships, care for shared spaces and one's own well-being. Each day will bring one simple challenge that students, staff and the general public can take part in.
