European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW) is a Europe-wide festival of events, including conferences, exhibitions, workshops, seminars, film screenings, community meetings, open days, and many other activities. The variety of events organised is great, the aim is one: to show that we care about the future of the world we live in.

During the upcoming year, the faculties have prepared a rich program for you. You can look forward to a university-wide challenge, a lecture as part of the Academic Half-Hours, workshops, a campus walk, a working bee in the faculty garden, and together we will also train our memory and stimulate our brains.

Start with Yourself 

As part of Sustainability Week 2026, the Faculty of Theology will create the university-wide challenge "Start with Yourself." The goal is to show that sustainability is not only a matter of ecology, but also of interpersonal relationships, responsible consumption, care for shared space, mental well-being, and personal responsibility. Each day will offer one simple challenge that participants can fulfill in their everyday lives. The challenge will take place via social media. Students, employees, and the general public will be able to participate. Participants will share their experiences, photos, or short reflections—not only what went well, but also what was difficult. The point is not competition, but mutual inspiration and motivation.

Compost Me

The Faculty of Arts, in cooperation with the One World festival, has prepared a screening of the film Compost Me. The screening will be free of charge, followed by a discussion on the topic.

Use of Local and Organic Foods in Public Catering

 A lecture by Assoc. Prof. Jan Moudrý from the Faculty of Agriculture and Technology. Details will be added.

Vermicomposting as a Sustainable Approach to Kitchen Waste Management 

A workshop with Assoc. Prof. Jaroslav Bernas from the Faculty of Agriculture and Technology. Details will be added.

Sustainable Mineralogy 

A lecture with a demonstration of minerals and rocks by Ing. Martin Musil, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Agriculture and Technology. Details will be added.

Working Bee in the Faculty Garden, Faculty of Science, USB 

In the week of October 5–9, a one-afternoon working bee will take place in the faculty garden of the Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia (Branišovská 1760). The exact date will be specified according to the weather. We have joint gardening work ahead of us – for example, turning the compost, planting flower bulbs, or weeding the sand dune. In addition to helping in the garden, you will also have the opportunity to learn more about how it works. The garden features, for instance, a pond, an insect hotel, and a number of other elements supporting biodiversity. We will gladly share our experiences and inspiration on how to create similar elements in your own garden or around your home.

Nature Walk 

Calla and the Faculty of Science, USB, are organizing an event on Saturday, October 4, 2026, as part of the cycle of nature walks for the public. It will take place on the USB campus, primarily in the faculty garden of the Faculty of Science, USB. The walk will be guided by botanist Klára Řehounková, ornithologist Petr Veselý, and entomologists Vojtěch Kolář and Jiří Řehounek. The walk will begin with a demonstration of bird trapping and ringing, and will also include catching aquatic insects from ponds on campus and a botanical-entomological walk through the faculty garden, including the sand dune.

Land-Art Still Alive. Searching for New Opportunities for the Sustainability of a Place, Academic Half-Hours 

This lecture follows up on the topic of Land-Art presented two years ago. Land-Art as an artistic protest against galleries, the exclusivity of art, and the alienation of the artwork from nature has evolved into many today's forms. However, the basic ethos of protest and respect for nature remains. We will present iconic works of Land-Art and its continuation in the original conditions of the Svachovka resort on the golf course, where a project connecting the landscape, art, and non-golf visitors is beginning to be realized. We will try to answer the question of the extent to which this involves sustainability.

Do you want to do something for yourself and your brain? Come exercise your brain with us to maintain neuroplasticity. At the workshop, you will get acquainted with memory techniques (mnemonics) and try out exercises practically. Details will be added.

Demonstration of the Sustainable Operation of the Simulation Center, Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, USB 

Tours of the simulation center of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, USB, during which visitors will be introduced to its operation, sustainability, and the opportunities it offers. Details will be added.
