PhDr. Stanislav Doležal, Ph.D. (FAR USB, Institute of History)
The Reign of Constantine, 306 – 337. Continuity and Change in the Late Roman Empire
Palgrave Macmillan, Cham 2022
Original research monograph

The award-winning book deals primarily with the complex problems associated with the political career of Emperor Constantine I, but it also deals with the political history of the tetrarchy in general and in the opening chapter discusses in detail the political history of the entire 3rd century. Another purpose of the book is to analyse the economic, religious and social situation of the Roman Empire at various stages of its development in the 3rd century and the first third of the 4th century. The author takes issue with the conclusions of some of the distinguished scholars who have studied or are studying Constantine's career and offers his own interpretation on some of the problems that historical scholarship has long addressed. It is thus not just another retelling of Constantine's story, but rather a search for an entirely new grasp of Constantine's person and his politics in the context of the history of the 3rd and early 4th centuries.

Global phylogenetic analysis reveals multiple origins and correlates of genital mutilation/cutting
Nature Human Behaviour, 6(5), 635-645, 2022
Original research work (journal article)

Rituals in which humans deliberately endanger their health and reduce their fertility are a continuing mystery to evolutionary anthropologists. These rituals include traditional forms of male and female circumcision. The award-winning study combines ethnographic, demographic, and ecological data with modern phylogenetic methods to show that circumcision originated multiple times independently, in several cases 2,000-3,000 years earlier than the archaeological record supports. Female circumcision originated and is maintained only in societies that practice male circumcision.

Water reuse for aquaculture: Comparative removal efficacy and aquatic hazard reduction of pharmaceuticals by a pond treatment system during a one-year study.
Journal of Hazardous Materials 421 (2022) 126712, Elsevier
Original research work (journal article)

Wastewater reuse is now becoming increasingly important for aquaculture and helps to reduce pressure on water resources. However, the reuse of treated wastewater poses certain safety risks. An award-winning study tested the effectiveness of a bio-pond in terms of removing pharmaceuticals from treated wastewater and assessed the risks of using treated water for fish production. Potential ecotoxicological risks, including antibiotic resistance, were significantly reduced, which may be essential for the subsequent reuse of wastewater in aquaculture.
