Human Rights Day 10. 12.

10 December is the Human Rights Day, commemorating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights issued by the United Nations in 1948. The University of South Bohemia takes this opportunity to commemorate the importance of human rights around the world and joins in solidarity with Ales Bialiatski and Belarusian human rights defenders, as requested by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and Belarusian human rights organizations.

Ales Bialiatski, founder of the Vyasna Human Rights Centre and winner of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, is one of nearly 1 400 political prisoners in Belarus.
Since the Lukashenko regime came to power in 1994, human rights defenders have been under constant attack. Human rights organisations have been denied registration and lawyers have had their licences revoked for defending political activists and reporting on the conditions of their detention or violating fair trial guarantees.
Ales Bialjacki was illegally detained and is now awaiting trial. Ales received the news that he had won the Nobel Peace Prize in a dark basement cell, with severely restricted access to correspondence. His arrest and trial were Lukashenko's attempt to silence the voices of freedom.
