Children in the Czech-Austrian border region will learn German and Czech

From September, children on the Czech side of the border will learn German, and on the Austrian side, they will learn Czech, under the guidance of the Department of German Studies at the Faculty of Education of the University of South Bohemia. This will take place in kindergartens and primary schools in the border municipalities of Vyšší Brod, Loučovice, Lipno nad Vltavou, Přední Výtoň, and in Bad Leonfelden, Vorderweißenbach, and St. Stefan am Afiesel.
All of this is thanks to the project “Sprachenbrücken – Jazykové mosty” (SBJM – Language Bridges, ATCZ00220), which is supported by the “Interreg Austria – Czech Republic 2021–2027” program. The lead partner of the project is the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, specifically the Department of German Studies at the Faculty of Education. The Austrian partner is Education Group GmbH from Linz, and the strategic partner is the association Lipno – Moldau z.s.
On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, mayors of the municipalities or their representatives, principals of kindergartens and primary schools, teachers, and other invited guests met at the opening conference in Frymburk to jointly prepare the pilot school year 2025/2026.
