About the programme

Students are trained in modern ecology research. The courses cover various aspects of ecological theory as well as analysis and interpretation of ecological data using modern computational approaches. The main focus is on interactions among organisms and interactions of organisms with their environment, and consequences for the populations and functioning of communities. Strong emphasis is laid on the students' own research, which is reported in the Master thesis. The lecturers and other thesis supervisors lead high-quality research, often in close collaboration with the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Programme structure

Each student is obliged to acquire a minimum of 120 credits: 52 (or 39) credits for work on Master thesis, min. 40 (or 53) for mandatory-elective subjects, and the remainder for other elective subjects. The workload is about 5-6 courses per semester in addition to work on master thesis. Mandatory-elective courses include e.g. Community Ecology, Evolutionary Ecology, Modern Regression Methods, Tropical Ecology or Plant-Animal Interactions. In addition, several field trips and practical nature-conservation courses are included. The master-thesis research is supposed to be conducted throughout the two years. The study is completed by State Final Exam, part of which consists of defending the Master thesis. In the thesis, students demonstrate their capability of theoretical (review) as well as experimental scientific work in the selected field of study.

Graduate profile

  • Students will acquire advanced knowledge and skills in ecology, especially the ability to design, perform and evaluate experiments in the field or labs. They will also acquire strong statistical foundations, the ability to present research outcomes or write successful grant proposals and they will develop critical thinking in reading scientific literature.
As graduates, they will also be ready to pursue a PhD in Ecology at any university or a research institute in the world.

How to apply

Admission takes place online and candidates are selected based on motivation letters followed by interviews with shortlisted candidates. New students are admitted twice a year with application deadlines usually in mid-May and end of October.

Application requirements:
1) Online application
2) Motivation letter: introduce yourself, explain your motivation for joining this study programme, and your previous experience in ecology including the description of your Bachelor´s (or similar) research project (aims, methods and key findings) in no more than 300 words.
3) Proposal of Master's project: supplement the motivation letter (possibly in a single file) with a proposal of your ideal Master´s research project in 300 words maximum. Although short, it should include the aims, their justification, and the methods.
4) Administrative fee: CZK 700
A certified copy of the bachelor's degree is required from successful applicants shortly after the interview. Recognition of foreign education is charged CZK 700.
