Plant swap, bioeconomy or brownfields – and much more – were offered at European Sustainable Development Week at the University of South Bohemia

Universities across the Czech Republic have once again joined the European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW) initiative, which connects education, community life, and sustainability principles. During this period, dozens of workshops, discussions, swaps, collection campaigns, as well as sporting and educational activities for students, staff, and the public took place at universities around the country. The University of South Bohemia took part in this event for the third time, together with 24 other public universities in the Czech Republic.

The theme of this year’s edition was “Resilience and Balance” – the ability to find a sustainable approach to oneself, to society, and to the environment.

Students, staff, and the public had the opportunity to attend several lectures at the University of South Bohemia focused on bioeconomy, methods of sustainable land use, and the issue of brownfields. In addition, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Theology introduced new courses on environmental aspects in literature, viewed through the lenses of ethics, theology, and pedagogy.

However, the greatest interest among visitors was sparked by excursions to the Aquaponics Hall and by book and plant swaps. The plant swap was even organised by the students of the Faculty of Agriculture and Technology, who also guided visitors through the faculty’s botanical atrium.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who took part in European Sustainable Development Week, participated actively, and thereby demonstrated that sustainability and social responsibility are not only timely topics but also part of all our daily lives. Thank you for the pleasant atmosphere at the various events, and we look forward to next year’s edition.
