MEYS held a seminar on the reform and current challenges of doctoral studies at USB

On 24 April, a seminar on the reform and current challenges of doctoral studies, organised by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, took place at the Faculty of Science of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. The topics discussed were mainly the reform of doctoral studies and quality assurance, setting the standard of the supervisor in doctoral studies or examples from practice of doctoral students' involvement in creative or grant activities.

‘Whether graduates find employment in the scientific environment, the private sphere or other sectors, they play an important role everywhere owing to the skills and knowledge they possess that enable them to find and implement innovative solutions to social, technological and other problems and challenges. Therefore, working on the development and improvement of the quality of doctoral studies is essential,’ said Radka Wildová, Deputy Director of the Higher Education, Science and Research Section, at the beginning of the seminar.

The seminar was attended, among others, by Jaroslav Miller, Deputy Minister of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, Robert Plaga, Chairman of the Board of the National Accreditation Bureau for Higher Education, and František Vácha, Dean of the Faculty of Science of the University of South Bohemia, as a representative of the host university.

In the morning part of the seminar, the standards of supervisors in doctoral studies were discussed according to the proposal of the National Accreditation Office for Higher Education, the Student Chamber of the Board of Higher Education Institutions and the Czech Association of Doctoral Students. The afternoon part of the seminar was then devoted to sharing examples of good practice, both on the topic of supervisor standards and in the involvement of doctoral students in practice and creative activities, which involved representatives of the management of many Czech higher education institutions. At the same time, it was also possible to discuss a student who was directly one of the speakers in this session and could present his/her experience of involvement in research activities or share his/her experience of travelling to foreign research facilities.

‘Better support for PhD students, both in terms of funding and in terms of professional guidance and support services, will make Czech higher education a more attractive destination for those interested in scientific careers, even in international competition, and will support its position at least in the international context. The Ministry of Education is ready to support activities to this end. However, to achieve such goals, the involvement, cooperation and efforts of all key stakeholders are ultimately necessary,’ said Radka Wildová, the Chief Director, at the end of the seminar.
