The defence was held in the presence of all designated members of the committee and both opponents.
Introduction of the committee and opponents
Introduction of the candidate by his supervisor
Presentation of the dissertation thesis by the candidate in 30 minutes
Supervisor’s assessment by Dr. Marek Šmejkal
Opponent’s evaluation by Priv.-Doz. Christoph Hauer – a brief summary, questions: How can fish populations adapt to hydropeaking in evolutionary terms? Are there any bottlenecks that would prevent such adaptations? What are the upper limits of water flow speed for successful fish reproduction, e.g. in alpine streams? Which fishes do you consider as generalists in your reservoir tributary system? What are the target conditions of streams for good reproduction under hydropeaking and/or its restrictions? Is there any strategy of weir removal on Czech rivers?
Opponent’s evaluation by doc. Pavel Jurajda – a brief summary; questions: Why did the hydropeaking system differ so much among the years studied? Is the Želivka population of asp worth protecting under the Natura 2000 if its natural reproduction is insufficient? He also added few more comments and questions from the written evaluation.
Questions and comments from the committee and other guests:
Bláha – comment on terminology of non-native species.
Čech – what is the effect of predators on asp, like otter, herons, catfish, etc.? How about spawning asp in other small tributaries to the reservoir?
Znachor – have you considered any effects of stream temperature on the eggs?
Hejzlar – Should we differentiate the effects of reservoir as HMWB?
Hauer – comment on the different approaches in Austria and Czechia to the stream WFD classification of the HMWB.
Peterka – What is your opinion on possible effects of the newly planned weir Dívčí kámen on fish populations?
Jurajda – do you know any other reservoir where rheophilic fish spawning is affected by an upstream reservoir?
Říha – how often did you sample asp in the reservoir?
Jůza – what is the annual stocking density od asp in the reservoir?
Boukal – are there other viable asp populations in Czech rivers or reservoirs? How fragile is the species worldwide? What should be the take home message(s) of your study?
Overall assessment: Daniel Bartoň has proven his ability to plan and conduct scientific research successfully and satisfactorily responded to all questions and comments in the discussion.
Committee poll: 9 valid ballot papers: passed 9×, failed 0×.
