The student will analyze four novels, two by African American and two by white Americans which all have as their central focus the fate of black Americans after the Civil War and slavery had been ended. With slavery over the lives of many black slaves changed dramatically and positively but for some others the life of poverty and injustice continued, as these novels attest. Included among the themes are the citizenship rights given and then again taken away from African Americans. The overall situation of blacks will be analyzed and compared in these four novels.
