Seminar for PhD supervisors

within the School of Doctoral Studies

The content of this 3-day highly interactive workshop basically follows the entire PhD process from selection to graduation. The focus lies on the different roles and expectations of PhD candidates and their supervisors and how this may change during the 4-year program.

The course consists of:

Short sessions in which specific skills, competences and insight that are required for good supervision are addressed:

1. Your motivation
2. Interaction and communication
3. Relations
4. Cultural challenges

Accordingly, the 4 consecutive phases of the PhD program are discussed:

1. Selection the PhD candidate
2. Start-up of the PhD Program (project proposal, planning, education program of the PhD candidate, expectations, and roles)
3. Evaluation of progress and quality, including:

1. How to evaluate
2. Tackling identified challenges
3. Changing role of PhD and supervisor during the program
4. Career perspectives

4. The last stretch to finalize the PhD
