The mission, vision and values of the USB


​As a prominent centre of learning, independent knowledge and creativity, the USB focuses on the scientific, cultural, social and economic development of society, thereby fulfilling the mission of a university-type higher-education facility pursuant to Section 1 of the Higher Education Act. Pursuant to Section 1 of the Act referred to above, the USB Statutes (Article 2) and the Strategic plan (formerly referred to as the Long-term plan) of the USB for the 2016 - 2020 period, it is the fundamental mission of the USB to develop educational achievement, promote independent knowledge and creative activities, while actively meeting its social responsibility in the economic, social, cultural and environmental field. These are the foundations upon which the visions and values of the USB rest.  

It is the vision of the USB to achieve the following by 2020:

  • to be a university which is of benefit to the city and the region,
  • to be a highly sought-after, friendly university, as well as being one of the top universities in the Czech Republic,
  • to be a university able to compete on both the European and global levels.

The values of the USB include:

  • being professional – the USB draws upon highly qualified, competent staff in all areas of its activities,
  • being international – the USB builds upon international cooperation on the global level, placing particular emphasis on the Danube-Vltava Region,
  • being open – the USB is open to accept and share new ideas and approaches, as well as to building new partnerships,
  • being ambitious – the USB is a responsive institution and sets ambitious goals in all its fields of activities,
  • being integrative – the USB brings together internal and external partners and provides an environment in which their ideas may be expressed and implemented.

The principal goal of the USB as a research organisation is to conduct independent fundamental research, industrial research or experimental development and publicly disseminate the outputs of these activities through teaching, publishing or knowledge transfer. Educational activities and related activities in the field of science and research, development and innovation, art and other creative activities (hereinafter “creative activities”) at the USB are offered as different majors in the economic, humanities, pedagogy, natural science, social, technical, art, medical and agricultural fields of study, all of which are on an international level. In addition to educational and creative activities, the USB also engages in ancillary activities within the meaning of Section 20 of the above-mentioned Act, helping to fulfil the mission of the USB.

In order to support its activities, the USB provides the following services in-house or ensures the provision of the following:

  • work and study conditions corresponding to its financial, physical and spatial resources,
  • information services, library stocks and access to these stocks, access to electronic information and information technologies, publishing services, consultancy services and other services for students related to their studies,
  • conditions to support sports and cultural activities related to fulfilling the mission of the USB, including the sponsoring of activities of associations and groups formed by members of the academic community of the USB, which help to fulfil the mission of the USB through their activities,
  • social conditions, including student accommodation and canteens for students and employees in internal dedicated facilities,
  • facilitating making and maintaining relationships with graduates.
